OCPP 1.6 vs OCPP 2.0.1 for EV Charging Network Operators: OCPP 2.0.1 is becoming the preferred option for new EV charging networks because it supports stronger security, advanced device management, smart charging, and future vehicle-grid services. OCPP 1.6 still works well for existing deployments, with millions of chargers using it worldwide since its release in 2015, but operators planning large-scale expansion should evaluate OCPP 2.0.1 for long-term compatibility.

Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) has become the standard communication method between EV chargers and charging management systems. Developed by the Open Charge Alliance (OCA), OCPP allows charging stations from different manufacturers to connect with backend platforms without relying on one supplier. Since OCPP 1.6 was released in 2015, it has been adopted by a large number of charging operators, with many public charging networks still using this version in 2024.

The wide adoption of OCPP 1.6 created a stable foundation for EV charging services, but charging networks have changed significantly. Early charging systems mainly focused on starting and stopping charging sessions, collecting meter data, and processing payments. Newer networks must support thousands of chargers, renewable energy integration, fleet charging, remote maintenance, and stronger cybersecurity requirements.

The improved device management in OCPP 2.0.1 changes how operators maintain charging networks. A large operator managing 10,000 charging points may receive thousands of status messages every day. With OCPP 1.6, identifying the exact source of a charger problem often requires additional diagnostics. The selection between OCPP 1.6 and OCPP 2.0.1 depends on network size, business plans, and technology requirements. OCPP 1.6 remains a reliable choice for existing charging infrastructure, while OCPP 2.0.1 better matches the requirements of modern EV charging networks expected to support larger numbers of vehicles, chargers, and energy services in the coming years.
